There are Bible verses you expect. John 3:16. The Sermon on the Mount. Psalm 23. And then there is Ecclesiastes 9:7. A verse that has surprised Christians for centuries, because it is so direct, so human, so not pious Bible kitsch.
"Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart, for God has already approved what you do." (Ecclesiastes 9:7)
We wrote it on a wine glass. Here is why.
Who Actually Wrote Ecclesiastes?
The book of Ecclesiastes, in Hebrew Qohelet, is probably the most philosophical book in the entire Bible. Its author, who calls himself the "Preacher" or "Assembler", thinks out loud: about the meaning of life, about work, joy, death, wisdom and loneliness. The tone is direct, sometimes sobering, sometimes surprisingly cheerful.
Ecclesiastes 9:7 belongs to the cheerful side. And that is no coincidence.
What Does Ecclesiastes 9:7 Mean in Context?
The verse stands in the middle of a passage that deals with the theme of joy, despite everything. Just before it, the Preacher writes that death and life are in God's hands and we have no influence over them. His conclusion: So live. So eat. So drink. Not out of indifference, but out of trust.
"For God has already approved what you do" | that is the decisive point. It is not about unbridled enjoyment. It is about saying yes to a good moment, in the knowledge that God himself is present in these ordinary moments.
Theologically, this is called incarnation in everyday life.
Why Do Christians Sometimes Struggle with Such Verses?
Honestly: because many of us have inherited a spirituality that equates joy with superficiality. The unspoken model is that whoever truly believes does not celebrate. Does not drink. Sits there seriously.
The book of Ecclesiastes thinks differently. It accepts life, the whole of life, with wine and bread and company, as God-given. Not despite faith, but because of it.
"All is vanity", says the Preacher elsewhere. And then: But eat your bread. Drink your wine. Live this moment fully.
How the Wine Glass Opens Conversations
What happens when someone holds a wine glass with "Ecclesiastes 9:7" and a guest asks: "What does it say?" In exactly that moment some of the best conversations about faith, joy and life begin.
No tract. No lecture. A wine glass. And a verse that speaks for itself.
That is exactly what we want to achieve with our wine glasses: make faith visible without having to explain it.
For Whom Is This Wine Glass the Right Gift?
For people who believe deeply and still enjoy life. For theologians with a sense of humor. For Christians who sometimes have to explain to themselves that joy is permitted. For everyone who is looking for a conversation starter at the next dinner that does not force anything.
It is also a wonderful gift for pastors. Because almost every pastoral counselor knows the moment when they have to explain to someone: God wants your happiness. Sometimes a wine glass helps with that.
